Dr. Elaheh Bozorgzadeh

Elaheh (Eli) Bozorgzadeh, a computer scientist and professor in UC Irvine's Department of Computer Science affiliated with the Center for Embedded Computer Systems (CECS), specializes in the efficient intersection of hardware and software design for embedded devices like smartphones and smart appliances. Her sustainability research examines the efficiency and challenges of sustainable operations in these devices, including their energy sources, using data from sensors to assess their viability.

Eli advocates introducing the "Internet of Things" concept to PK-12 science and technology classes, fostering a better understanding of everyday technologies. She believes hands-on experiments with sensors, hardware, and solar panels can engage young students in computer science and engineering concepts.

Education is crucial for sustainable climate action, and Eli emphasizes the importance of understanding the facts, resources, technologies, and methods to combat climate change. While electronic waste is a concern due to short lifespans, researchers are working on more efficient recycling methods. Eli encourages PK-12 teachers to explore tools and technologies for addressing climate change and assures students that they are already making a difference by learning about these issues. She advises students to persevere in their efforts to combat climate change.
