Dr. Amy Wilentz
"Amy Wilentz is a professor in the Literary Journalism program within the English department at UC Irvine. She developed and currently teaches a course called Climate Change Literature where students read and discuss climate change articles, news, fiction and nonfiction books. Amy is also a journalist focusing on Haiti's environmental and political issues. Dr. Wilentz's writing journey began at The Nation Magazine and Time magazine, with her initial foray into Haiti's politics. She subsequently authored books centered on Haiti's political and environmental challenges.
Transitioning from climate change writing to teaching, Amy emphasizes conveying climate change topics in an accessible manner to avoid causing fear and denial. She advocates integrating climate change literature into PK-12 curricula, starting with young children reading newspapers to stay informed about global events.
Dr. Wilentz believes that everyone must understand that climate change affects us all and that collaboration is key to addressing it. She encourages PK-12 teachers to teach facts, nurture an appreciation for nature, and promote helping others. She also inspires students to engage with global issues, fostering the belief that they can effect positive change in the world."
